Theodore B. Shybut, M.D.
Theodore B Shybut MD FAANA FAAOS

I have dedicated my career to the care of injured athletes and active people. My mission in over a decade of practice has been to help teenagers and adults with knee, shoulder, and athletic elbow conditions return to the highest levels of competition through individualized care, whether nonoperative or surgical. My surgical practice includes a high volume of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, articular cartilage restoration such as osteochondral allografts and MACI, meniscus repair and transplants, shoulder stabilization, labral repairs, Latarjet, rotator cuff repair, anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacements, and elbow repairs such as Tommy John and biceps ruptures. I have extensive experience treating professionals, olympians, and elite competitors, and my aim is to help everyone I see to achieve their activity goals.

My efforts have been repeatedly recognized for quality care and surgical expertise, earning multiple Castle Connolly Top Doctor awards, Texas SuperDoctor awards, and Houstonia Magazine Top Doc Awards. While on faculty at Baylor in Houston I was recognized with an award for Excellence in Patient Care. In Houston I spent time at the Veterans Affairs hospital and performed the first BEAR ACL repair nationwide in the VA system.

My education, training, and practice have been at premier institutions: Harvard University, Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, New York University Langone Orthopedic Hospital / NYU Medical Center (previously NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases), and Baylor College of Medicine. As a national expert in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, I am excited to join the internationally renowned Southern California Orthopedic Institute in Los Angeles as faculty for its prestigious sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship.

I will serve as team orthopedic surgeon for College of the Canyons and multiple Santa Clarita Valley high schools. I served as head team physician for the Major League Rugby (MLR) Houston SaberCats from 2017-2022. I previously served as head team physician for Texas Southern University, and multiple Houston area high schools. During my fellowship I gained in depth exposure to professional and collegiate sports, assisting in the care of the National Football League Texans, Major League Baseball Astros, National Basketball Association Rockets, Major League Soccer Dynamo, and NCAA University of Houston athletics.

My research interests reflect my broad surgical expertise. I am routinely invited to provide expert commentary and have published in leading orthopedic journals and presented at national meetings on anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscus repair, knee biomechanics, shoulder instability surgery, biologics such as platelet rich plasma, and surgical techniques for rotator cuff repair, cartilage restoration, baseball elbow injuries, knee surgery, and more. I serve on the Editorial Board for Arthroscopy: the Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Surgery and review for multiple other journals.

I am involved in national orthopedic society leadership for the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS). I am Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS), including subspecialty certification in Orthopedic Sports Medicine, and I hold Fellow of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (FAANA) status, a unique distinction of leadership and advancement in the field of arthroscopic surgery.

Outside of the operating room I am a fan of human performance. I enjoy the challenges of sport, pushing myself with athletics just as in surgery. While at Harvard I competed in intercollegiate lightweight crew. I have raced the New York City and Boston Marathons, including a 2:45 PR in Boston, and during residency in Manhattan I ran a 4:43 5th Avenue Mile. In addition I cherish time with my wife and 3 children, and I enjoy travel, rock music, history, skiing, and being outdoors.

Like an athlete approaching competition, I view every surgery and patient encounter as opportunities to be better than my previous best. Please let me know if there is any way we can improve your experience at my practice at Southern California Orthopedic Institute.

Thank you for your interest in consulting with me. I look forward to meeting you.
